Formula Student

Formula Student in Sweden

Formula Student is an international engineering design competition where university students design, build, test, and compete with race cars. In Sweden, the competition connects student engineers across universities, industries, and technical disciplines.

The Swedish scene

Many teams, one engineering challenge

Sweden has several active Formula Student teams from different universities. Each team develops its own car, organization, technical concepts, and competition strategy while contributing to a wider Swedish Formula Student community.

LiU Formula Student is Linköping University’s Formula Student team and one of Sweden’s leading Formula Student teams. The project gives students practical experience in engineering, manufacturing, business, leadership, and communication.

From Linköping, Lund, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Karlstad, Luleå, Umeå, and Jönköping, Swedish Formula Student teams connect university studies with practical vehicle development. Teams exchange knowledge, meet sponsors and alumni, test vehicles, and represent Swedish engineering at competitions around Europe.

A student-run racing project

LiU Formula Student designs and builds electric Formula Student race cars through collaboration across mechanical engineering, electronics, software, aerodynamics, manufacturing, business, and project management.

The result is more than a race car. Members work with real deadlines, technical reviews, supplier contact, sponsorship, testing, and competition preparation in a project that resembles professional product development.

Electric race car engineering

Every system has to work together

Building an electric Formula Student car requires a broad technical system view. Teams need to integrate mechanical design, high-voltage systems, electronics, embedded software, cooling, safety systems, and vehicle dynamics into one reliable package.

At LiU Formula Student, students learn by taking responsibility for real components and real engineering decisions. Testing and validation are essential parts of turning simulations, CAD models, and calculations into a car that can perform on track.

Competing in Europe

The competition rewards the whole process

Swedish Formula Student teams typically prepare for international competitions in Europe. These events evaluate both the engineering process and the car’s performance, combining technical judging with demanding track events.

A season usually starts long before the car reaches the track. Teams design during autumn and winter, manufacture and integrate systems during spring, then use testing and summer competitions to validate the car, the engineering process, and the team’s ability to work under pressure.

Static events

Teams explain the engineering, cost, manufacturing process, and business thinking behind the car to experienced judges.

Dynamic events

The car is evaluated on track through events such as acceleration, skidpad, autocross, endurance, and efficiency.

Team process

A strong Formula Student team needs planning, testing, documentation, supplier contact, and fast learning across disciplines.

European Formula Student competitions

Swedish teams apply to official Formula Student events based on class, registration results, testing progress, logistics, and strategic goals. These are common European competition references:

Nordic preparation

Swedish and Nordic teams also use testing events to find reliability issues before the official competition season.
