About the team
As a part of the Cost & Business Team you will get the opportunity to work with people from different programs and refine your skills in business, finance, and programming. As an organisation we are not only building a car for the competition but also showing the judges that we are able to see the bigger picture of manufacturing and running a business. We need to consider aspects such as sustainability, time and cost efficiency, and potential business opportunities. New for this year is additional focus on the environment by making emission calculations and a lifecycle analysis on parts of the car.
You will get the opportunity to be involved in a variety of tasks and meet a lot of other students within the organisation. Race cars are naturally a common interest within the association but definitely not a must for you to enjoy working in the team.
About the work and responsibilities
We are inviting driven individuals to join our team and as an applicant you will have the opportunity to express preferences for specific tasks, allowing you to focus on areas of interest and expertise. Maybe you are good at presenting work through powerpoint or in video format or you are oriented towards making calculations? As a member of the Cost & Business Team you will have the opportunity to work with other people in the association, contribute to a variety of tasks and make a meaningful impact towards our association’s success. The commitment for each role entails 8 hours per week, distributed across two 4-hour workshops during monday and wednesday evenings.
Following are the responsibilities of our team:
Business Plan Presentation: A fictional business idea with the car in focus should be developed and described to the judges at the competition. This requires a thorough business plan and you will get the chance to practise your presentation skills. A short summary of the idea should also be presented in a 30 second Pitch Video.
Cost Report Documents (CRD): For the competition it is not enough to build a car, the judges want us to show them how we did it, and explain the decisions made along the way. Our responsibility is to collect information from the rest of the organisation and present it in certain documents. The CRD will be an important contribution towards the competition and a foundation for the Cost & Manufacturing event. You will get the chance to collaborate with members across the organisation and maintain the system where all this information is collected.
Cost & Manufacturing Event (C&M): Before the competition every part on the car needs to be reported in the Bill of Materials (BOM), which will be complemented by the Supporting Material File (SMF) that includes pictures and drawings of all the parts. Some systems need to be reported more thoroughly than others, in a Costed Carbonized Bill of Materials (CCBOM). We will have to make our own cost and emissions calculations for the parts that we produce in the association and these calculations will be presented in the Cost Explanation File (CEF).
During the competition members of our team will participate in the Cost Discussion, explaining the thought process behind our calculations. Together with engineers that are familiar with the production decisions within the different systems we will also present the Cost Report Documents to the judges. We will collaborate with members from different teams and make sure that relevant preparations are made beforehand.
The Real Case Scenario is another task for the discussion event that we will prepare for by practising during the year. We are given a unique case for each competition and will prepare and present our solution to the judges during the C&M event. Depending on the task we will collaborate with members of other teams that can contribute with their knowledge about the car.
Who are you?
You are a driven individual who is eager to develop and contribute your unique set of skills to our team. You have a positive attitude and an ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment. With an open mindset you have a desire to acquire new skills and are looking for opportunities for continuous learning and growth. Joining a student association is a fun commitment that could complement your studies, and you see yourself staying in the organisation beyond this semester.
You are currently studying within fields such as environment, engineering, business administration, finance, or related disciplines. Through this foundational knowledge you have a strong basis for understanding our team’s focus areas.
