Cost & Business

Expired on: Sep 8, 2024

About the team

As a part of the Cost & Business Team, you will get the opportunity to work with people from different programs and refine your skills in business, finance, and programming. As an organisation, we are not only building a car for the competition but also showing the judges that we are able to see the bigger picture of manufacturing and running a business. We need to consider aspects such as sustainability, time and cost efficiency, and potential business opportunities. You will get the opportunity to be involved in a variety of tasks and meet a lot of other students within the organisation. Race cars are naturally a common interest within the association but definitely not a must for you to enjoy working in the team.

About the work and responsibilities

We are inviting driven individuals to join our team and as an applicant you will have the opportunity to express preferences for specific tasks, allowing you to focus on areas of interest and expertise. As a member of the Cost & Business Team you will have the opportunity to work with other people in the association, contribute to a variety of tasks and make a meaningful impact towards our association’s success. The commitment for each role entails 8 hours per week, distributed across two 4-hour workshops during Monday and Wednesday evenings.

The following are the responsibilities of our team:

Business Plan Presentation

A fictional business idea with the car in focus should be developed and described to the judges at the competition. This requires a thorough business plan and you will get the chance to practise your presentation skills. A short summary of the idea should also be presented in a 30-second Pitch Video

Cost Report Documents (CRD)

For the competition it is not enough to build a car, the judges want us to show them how we did it, and explain the decisions made along the way. Our responsibility is to collect information from the rest of the organisation and present it in certain documents. The  CRD will be an important contribution towards the competition and a foundation for the Cost & Manufacturing event. You will get the chance to collaborate with members across the organisation and maintain the system where all this information is collected.

Before the competition, every part of the car needs to be reported in the Bill of Materials (BOM), which will be complemented by the Supporting Material File (SMF) which includes pictures and drawings of all the parts. Some systems need to be reported more thoroughly than others, in a Detailed Bill of Materials (DBOM) and for some systems, we also need to express the costs (CBOM). We will have to make our own cost calculations for the parts that we produce in the association and these calculations will be presented in the Cost Explanation File (CEF).

Cost and Manufacturing Event (C&M)

During the competition members of our team will participate in the Cost Discussion, explaining the thought process behind our calculations. Together with engineers that are familiar with the production decisions within the different systems, we will also present the Cost Report Documents to the judges. We will collaborate with members from different teams and make sure that relevant preparations are made beforehand.

The Real Case Scenario is another task for the discussion event that we will prepare for by practising during the year. We are given a unique case for each competition and will prepare and present our solution to the judges during the C&M event. Depending on the task we will collaborate with members of other teams that can contribute with their knowledge about the car.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for driven individuals who are eager to develop and contribute their unique set of skills to our team. We value a positive attitude and ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment. While we value a range of qualities, we have identified some key criteria that we believe will be essential for potential team members.

Willingness to Learn: An open mindset and a desire to acquire new skills and knowledge are vital. Our team environment encourages continuous learning and growth.

Relevant Studies: Studies in fields such as engineering, business administration, finance, or related disciplines will be advantageous. This foundational knowledge will provide a strong basis for understanding our team’s focus areas.

Meritorious Professional and Personal Skills/Competencies:

We strive to create a diverse team and while we value the following skills highly they are not required competencies in our potential team members:

  • Analytical Skills: An ability to dive into details and conduct precise analysis.
  • Attention to Details: An eye for detail ensures the integrity of our data and analyses and is particularly important for the accuracy of our calculations.
  • Technical Knowledge: Knowledge in programming (meritorious if you are familiar with using Google Sheets and Google Apps Script), finance, presentation skills, entrepreneurship, or other skills related to our tasks.
  • Collaborative Mindset: Our team’s success relies on good communication and effective collaboration within the team as well as with others in the organisation.
  • Problem-Solving Capability: The ability to identify challenges and devise creative solutions is valuable  since it contributes to more effective decision-making.
  • Graphic design: Familiarity with using tools for picture/video editing, powerpoint etc. to contribute to presenting our work in a professional and inspiring manner.
