CAD Engineer

Expired on: Sep 8, 2024

About the Role

The CAD Engineer role in LiU Formula Student is key to our car’s design and development. When you apply for this role, you’ll be placed in the team that needs a CAD Engineer the most. Your work will focus on creating detailed designs and technical drawings, essential for building and optimizing our Formula Student car.

You could be assigned to the Aerodynamics, Vehicle Dynamics, Electronics, Chassis, or Test Team. Regardless of the team, you’ll be responsible for turning ideas into precise CAD models ready for manufacturing. This role suits those who are passionate about design, have an eye for detail, and enjoy working on challenging engineering projects. You will work closely with your team to ensure your designs meet technical requirements and integrate smoothly into the car.

Teams You Could Be Assigned To

When you apply for the CAD Engineer role, you may be placed in one of these teams:

  • Aerodynamics: Design aerodynamic components like wings, diffusers, and body panels. You’ll work with CFD engineers to refine these designs for better performance.
  • Vehicle Dynamics: Develop mechanical systems such as suspension, steering, and the powertrain. Your CAD models will ensure these systems are reliable and perform well during races.
  • Electronics: Create enclosures and mounts for electronic components. Your work will ensure these parts are protected and well-integrated into the car.
  • Chassis: Design the structural framework of the car, focusing on safety and weight. Your designs will be the backbone of the vehicle.
  • Test Team: Design and develop off-car systems like quick jacks, pit stands, and battery carts. Your CAD work will help organize and improve the test environment.

Work and Responsibilities

As a CAD Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing Components: Create detailed CAD models for various systems and components, from initial concepts to final production models.
  • Collaborating with Team Members: Work closely with engineers and specialists to ensure your designs meet specifications and integrate well with other systems.
  • Refining Designs: Improve your designs based on feedback from simulations, tests, and team input, ensuring they perform well and can be manufactured.
  • Producing Technical Drawings: Convert your CAD models into accurate technical drawings that guide the manufacturing process.
  • Supporting Manufacturing: Assist in manufacturing your designs to ensure they are produced to specification and function as intended.

Who We Are Looking For

We seek talented, detail-oriented individuals who love design and engineering. You should be able to work independently and as part of a team, with a focus on precision and innovation.

Necessary Skills for the Role
  • CAD Proficiency: Strong experience with CAD software, especially CREO Parametric. You should be skilled at creating 3D models and technical drawings.
  • Attention to Detail: A careful approach to design, ensuring all aspects of your models are accurate and ready for production.
  • Team Collaboration: Ability to work well with a team, communicate clearly, and incorporate feedback into your designs.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills to troubleshoot design challenges and develop creative solutions.
Meritorious Skills
  • Surface Modelling Experience: Useful for designing complex aerodynamic components.
  • FEM Analysis: Understanding of Finite Element Method (FEM) for assessing the structural integrity of your designs.
  • Experience with Manufacturing Drawings: Familiarity with creating detailed drawings for manufacturing.
