Aerodynamics – CFD Engineer

Expired on: Sep 8, 2024

About the team

The Aerodynamic Teams role is to design, simulate and manufacture all aerodynamic parts that are fitted onto the car – the so-called aerodynamic package. The Aerodynamic team also manufactures most composite components other subteams in Liu FS need.

The designs are made through brainstorming with teammates and then realised in CAD. While aerodynamic simulations are made with CFD and structural simulations are made with FEM. CAD designs are then iterated based on CFD results to improve performance.

The manufacturing of parts is to a large extent made with carbon fibre and carbon fibre sandwiches (not edible).

The aerodynamic package is divided up in smaller systems. These systems are from front to back the following: Front wing, Bodypanels, Side aero, Diffuser and Rear wing.

This year the goal is to improve CFD methodology and improve our cornering simulations.

About the work and responsibilities

CFD engineers are responsible for all CFD simulations, including pre- and post-processing. They are also responsible for developing, verifying, and if possible validating the CFD methodology. They are responsible for providing aerodynamic analysis of the CFD results, together with the design engineers, in order to improve the performance of the concepts.

Full car simulations will run on NSC (National Supercomputer Center), with simpler simulations like 2D airfoil placement optimization being run on regular computers. Meshing is done in ANSA and Fluent. Simulations are done in Fluent with post processing done with TBD.

The workload is around 10-15 hours a week, this number might increase for some weeks when extra weekend workshops are needed to either finish designs or parts in order to meet deadlines.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a hard working person with a strong interest in CFD and aerodynamics, who is good at communicating ideas and coming up with solutions to complex problems.  This person is patient, persistent and likes to see hard tasks through and is not afraid to wake up early to queue simulations ahead of the industry. For the role as CFD engineer the following is required:

  • Interested in aerodynamics.
  • Either of the following are required:
    • Having taken and passed TMMV08 Basic CFD, TMMV07 Advanced CFD and/or,  TMMV63 Computational Aerodynamics courses at LiU. And will be taking TMMV59 Applied CFD during the autumn.
    • Good knowledge of CFD, including knowledge of ANSA, Fluent, and ParaView. And will be taking Applied CFD during the autumn.

The following is meritorious for the role:

  • Interested in cars and car aerodynamics
  • Previous ANSA and fluent knowledge
  •  Good MATLAB and/or Python knowledge

Application Process

If you believe you would fit the Aerodynamics Team, please send your application (in Swedish or English) no later than September 8th. Attach your CV and tell us why you would be a great fit for this team.

LiU Formula Student may be a car association and it is always fun to work with people who share the same interests. However, you are of course welcome to apply to our association regardless of whether you are interested in cars or not.

The interviews will be held continuously during the recruitment period. If you have any questions regarding the recruitment process, please write to our HR team at hr@liuformulastudent.se. For specific questions about the team, reach out to the team leader for Aerodynamics  at robert.cole@liuformulastudent.se

We are looking forward to hearing from you!
