About the team

The Power Electronics team is responsible for all electrical systems which contribute to the propulsion of the car; the key systems to achieve this are the Battery, Inverter and Motor. We make sure that the car has a power source, a motor and that the driver has the means to control the motor. This is accomplished with the help of the following systems:

  • Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) – Is the interface between the driver and the motor. Consists of a micro controller and contains the software that controls many of the key functions in the car; it maps the throttle to a torque value, controls the cooling and much more. 
  • Battery Management System (BMS) – Ensures that the Li-ion batteries stay within the correct voltage and temperature range when charging and while driving. This is achieved by multiple PCBs that measure both the temperature and voltage of each battery cell. The information is interpreted in a micro controller.
  • Tractive System Active Light (TSAL) – A safety component that alerts people in the proximity of the car when high voltage is present outside the battery container. 
  • Tractive System Control Unit (TSCU) – Handles the activation/deactivation of the high current path to the inverter. 
  • Tractive System Wire Harness (TSWH) – The wire harness connecting the Battery, Inverter and Motor. 
  • Charger – Is a system located outside the car on a battery cart. The Charger itself is a bought product, but it needs its own wire harness and additional safety features. 

About the role

As the Team Leader for the Power Electronics team, having a interest in power electronics and knowledge within the field is very valuable. With that also having a curiosity for how it works and always look for solutions to a problem with your team members. You also need to put down time to learn all the systems and rules that are required for this role as it is important to understand the bigger picture of the things you are working on. The estimated workload will be around 20 hours per week.

Preferable competences:

  • Has completed a basic course in electronics
  • Experience with programming, preferably C/C++ (only needed for some systems)
  • Experience working with microcontrollers is meritorious
  • Experience with designing circuits and PCB’s is meritorious
  • Experience with CAN or other serial protocols like I2C or SPI is meritorious
  • Experience with working hands on with soldering and wiring is meritorious
  • Experience of working with high voltage is meritorious
  • Knowledge about electrical drivelines or inverters, engines, AMS/BMS and li-ion battery is meritorious
